HURYS Millimeter-Wave Radar Empowers Digital Transformation of Expressways, Setting a New Benchmark for Smart Highways in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei Region
As a key transportation infrastructure project under Hebei Province’s 14th Five-Year Plan, a major expressway expansion and upgrade project was completed at the end of 2024, bringing a new level of intelligent transportation capability to the region.

This expressway serves as a vital transportation corridor connecting the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei metropolitan area and plays an important role in regional economic integration. Following the expansion, daily traffic volume is expected to exceed 75,000 vehicles, with a high proportion of heavy trucks, creating increasingly complex traffic conditions and placing new demands on intelligent traffic management and road perception capabilities.

Against this backdrop, HURYS leveraged its independently developed next-generation traffic millimeter-wave radar technology to build an integrated “End–Edge–Cloud” collaborative perception system, injecting new digital capabilities into this nationally significant transportation artery.
Deep Integration of Millimeter-Wave Radar and Video Systems, Building a New Smart Transportation Ecosystem The project adopted HURYS’ innovative: “Dual-Radar Collaborative Perception Matrix” Deployment Solution Through back-to-back deployment of millimeter-wave radars, the system enables continuous vehicle trajectory tracking with a monitoring range exceeding 1,000 meters, effectively eliminating blind spots commonly found in traditional single-radar deployments. Combined with intelligent edge computing units, the system seamlessly integrates vehicle trajectories across the entire highway section and deeply fuses radar data with:
-
Video surveillance systems
-
License plate recognition systems
-
Traffic management platforms
creating a comprehensive spatiotemporal traffic data model. Even under challenging weather conditions such as:
-
Thunderstorms
-
Heavy fog
-
Severe visibility degradation
the system continues to deliver accurate and reliable traffic perception data, significantly improving intelligent highway management capabilities.
High-Precision Traffic Perception Making Smart Highways Smarter Based on HURYS’:
-
Decimeter-level vehicle trajectory data
-
Second-level incident detection capability
-
Multi-source fusion perception data
the project enables real-time visualization of vehicle movements through a digital twin platform, while supporting accurate reconstruction and analysis of historical traffic events.
Considering the high freight traffic volume and increased accident risks on this expressway, HURYS developed three intelligent application scenarios to enhance safety and operational efficiency.
- All-Weather Risk Warning Millimeter-wave radar continuously monitors vehicle trajectories across the entire highway section. The system automatically detects abnormal situations including:
-
Stopped vehicles
-
Wrong-way driving
-
Traffic accidents
and provides real-time warnings through variable message signs, effectively reducing safety risks.
- Second-Level Incident Detection and Response Through advanced Radar + Camera Integration and Radar + PTZ Camera Collaboration, the system can:
-
Detect sudden vehicle stops and abnormal events within seconds
-
Automatically capture video evidence
-
Trigger coordinated response through traffic management platforms
helping prevent secondary accidents and improving emergency response efficiency.
- Precise Monitoring of Key Vehicles By establishing a database of monitored vehicles, the system enables continuous tracking and intelligent supervision throughout the entire highway network. This improves:
-
Road safety management
-
Law enforcement efficiency
-
Operational control capabilities
Empowering Smart Transportation Upgrades and Creating an Industry Benchmark Throughout project implementation, the HURYS team remained committed to its core philosophy of: “Entrepreneurship-Oriented, User-Centered” The project team worked intensively to complete equipment deployment, commissioning, and system integration within a demanding schedule, ensuring timely operation and stable performance. With its core advantages of:
-
High-precision perception
-
All-weather monitoring
-
Intelligent warning capabilities
-
Reliable long-distance detection

HURYS millimeter-wave radar overcomes the limitations of traditional monitoring technologies and provides a more efficient, accurate, and dependable solution for complex highway environments.
Driving the Future of Intelligent Transportation The successful deployment of this project not only enhances the intelligent management capabilities of the expressway but also provides an innovative model for smart transportation development in the Beijing-Tianjin-Hebei region. Looking ahead, HURYS will continue deepening innovation across:
-
Intelligent transportation
-
Smart security
-
Low-altitude surveillance
Driven by advanced radar technology, HURYS will continue expanding the boundaries of smart mobility applications, supporting the development of:
-
Smart highways
-
Smart cities
-
Intelligent security systems
and creating a safer, more efficient, and more intelligent future of transportation.
